ARTIST STATEMENT

For over 40 years, Crowther has been exploring the watercolor medium. Landscapes are her favorite subject matter and, while many of her paintings represent the marshes and coastal environment of her native Ipswich, MA, she has painted the local scenery around her home in Brattleboro, Vermont, and adjacent New Hampshire locales for the past 35 years.

Crowther is particularly interested in the wet-on-wet and dry brush techniques. Although she implements various accessories to achieve special effects, she prefers pure paper to the artificial whites, the use of salt, wax, and masking techniques. If it’s snowing, well, a little white spatter might add just what is needed.

Education includes a BA from Carleton College, Northfield, MN, and an Ed.M. from Tufts University in Medford, MA. She was a former instructor of watercolor at Community College of Vermont and at the University of Vermont Extension. In addition, she was a volunteer "artist in residence" in the Brattleboro schools through the Arts Council of Windham County, and taught art in grades 1-6 at St. Michael’s School for three years. Presently, she instructs an on-going adult class at the Brattleboro Senior Center.

Crowther has exhibited locally through the Vermont Watercolor Society, at Art on the Mountain, (Watercolor Award 1986); Stratton Arts Festival, and Moore Free Library (First Prize 1994). She is a life member of the Deerfield Valley Art Association, and a former charter member of the Windham Art Gallery in Brattleboro.

Crowther has been a member of VWS since 1996 and has participated in workshops led by Don Stone, now of Monhegan Island, ME, Jon Neuse of Minneapolis, MN, and David Rohn of Putney, VT. She has also studied oil painting with Marlboro College instructor Frank Stout through the college’s community program, and with Pamela Fox of Rockport, MA.
