Jean Cannon is an experienced painter and art educator whose work can be viewed at outdoor venues around New England during the summer months. Several Vermont Galleries show her work year round: the Gallery on the Green in Shelburne, the Chaffee Center for the Visual Arts in Rutland, and Art on Main in Bristol. Her work ranges in scope from miniatures to murals. Her medium varies according to the subject and the surface, but current personal preferences are watercolor and oil paints.
Jeans style is based on keen draftsmanship, but not strict realism, and leans toward the surreal. She currently chooses doors and windows and ordinary household objects as her subjects. The doors occasionally serve as mysterious portals and all are vehicles for abstract compositional experiments. Subtlety of color and unexpected perspective are her strengths.
Jean has illustrated books, painted theater sets and designed and executed murals. Her largest mural to date has been a 9x 60 teepee interior. She has enjoyed collaborating with writers and theater producers and welcomes commissions of all kinds. She has received various grants and awards for her work, more of which can be seen on her website: www.jeancannon.com.
Also, Jean has directed the production of murals in a number of elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Vermont and currently teaches drawing and painting classes in the Burlington area.
