OPEN STUDIO WORKSHOP FOR VWS MEMBERS

PETER HUNTOON HOSTS AN OPEN STUDIO FOR VWS MEMBERS - AUGUST 20

Vermont Watercolor Society members are invited to Middletown Springs on Saturday, August 20, to visit the Studio of fellow watercolorist and VWS member, PETER HUNTOON.

Peter has been painting professionally since 1994, having studied with such contemporary masters as Frank Webb, Zoltan Szabo, Cheng Kee Chee, and Steven Quiller. Peter's work is distinguished by rich color, strong composition, and loose, efficient brushwork. His paintigs are represented in public and private collections around the world. An enthusiastic instructor, Peter conducts many workshops and demonstrations throughout the year.

On August 20, specifically for VWS members, Peter will provide a studio tour, starting promptly at 1:00 p.m., followed by a demonstration of his favorite watercolor techniques. Peter will describe his creative process and philosopy while painting an original work using a large demonstration mirror. Peter's studio overlooks beautiful Middletown Springs, an added treat.

Since space is limited to 25 people, members are asked to RSVP by contacting Marijke Westberg at vartland@sover.net There is no charge for this informative afternoon.

To get to Peter's Studio, drive to Rutland, then from Rutland, take Route 4 West to Exit 6. Take a left past Price Chopper onto Route 133 South. Stay on Route 133 for 9.7 miles to Haley Road (gravel) on the right. Go 50 yards up Haley Road and turn right onto Studio Lane. (House is on the left (taupe green with covered front and back porch.)

For those coming from the south, you may prefer to start in Middletown Springs. From Middletown Springs, head east on Route 133/140 towards Rutland for 1 mile. Find Haley Road on the left. Repeat the above instructions.

REVISED INFORMATION

Alright...I don't like this happening so late in the game but here goes:

The Enigma Gallery wants to keep the show up through the 8th with pick up on the 9th. You're all on your own to pick up on the 9th. I cannot coordinate it any further from this end.

I don't think anything sold, but it was a great show. They want to have us back from what I know. But please; EVERYONE be mindful of picking your work up on the 9th. Even if a gallery has storage, it is not appropriate for a group like ours to take advantage of these kind offers. We want to be as easy and unified a group as possible, so lets say: THANK YOU for wanting us to stay up on the walls for an extra week and do what we can to coordinate picking up our work on the appointed date.

They've been very wonderful to us!

I do not have time to write each person back individually as I'm in the middle of running a large workshop here in Woodstock. Thanks for your understanding.

Annette

Pick up at the Enigma Gallery

The very popular show at the Enigma Gallery in Essex Junction will be coming down this Sunday.

All members who have work in the show are responsible for picking up their paintings on the 31st between 11 AM and 4 PM. Our Show Coordinator has had a family emergency, so he will not be available to collect remaining paintings. Judy, Sheryl and myself are all in the middle of the John Lynch Watercolor Workshop here in Woodstock this week through Monday afternoon, so unfortunately, we will not be at the gallery.

Rather than emailing Sean or calling the gallery, let me know if you cannot pick up your work on Sunday. I know they have been wonderful hosts at Enigma and I'd like to do all we can to show we're professional and efficient by getting our work cleared out on time.

Thanks, Annette

Subject: Addendum to previous email for VWS

My apologies to Lisa Forster Beach who was the other Honorable Mention award winner for her piece in the Enigma Show. Vicky Herzberg's piece was selected to be on the postcard.

And Judy Laliberte, our ever efficient and detail oriented treasurer wrote to me to tell me that the Reed Gallery opening on September 17 will be from 3 to 6 PM...not the times I specified in the first email...

Thanks to those of you who read the "fine print"...I appreciate these corrections. Its nice to have our Society grow to the point that one person isn't able to keep everything straight anymore! I appreciate your patience with my comuniques these days...

Happy painting, happy fourth of July!

Annette

Update - July 4, 2005
Subject: Great Show...on to the next ones!

The opening at Eniqma Gallery went off beautifully thanks to Sean Callahan, show coordinator and all the members who were there to attend the opening on Friday night in Essex Junction. When I walked in at 7:00, the crowd was dwindling, but Pamela Siers was pleased with the 60 +/- people who showed up to see work of remarkable innovation and influence. Kandinsky would have been thrilled. We had two "award winners", Nancy Stone and Tina Bielenberg who have been given solo shows at Enigma in 2006. Judy Laliberte and Vicky Herzberg received awards as well for their work by the gallery. Several members became "signature members" with acceptance to this show.

Thanks to the Exhibition Committee's hard work we have several show opportunities coming up which I thought I would give you a "heads up" on before we have a chance to work on a newsletter.

VWS Fall Juried Show at the Reed Gallery, Chester, Vermont
September 17 through October 15
Opening Reception will be provided on September 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM
The aniticipate accepting 30-40 paintings, no metal frames and white or off-white mats only. The Theme will be open and the gallery will accept 40% commission on work sold. We will let you know of the delivery dates.

VWS Winter Juried Show at the V Gallery in Woodstock Vermont
December 17th through January 8th
Opening Reception on Saturday, December 17th
Assuming the work is strong enough, they will take up to 40 paintings for this show. The theme of the work is open to the artist and colored mats are accepted, though framing should be kept very simple. Work can be dropped off from 11 - 5 PM at the gallery on route 12 north just outside of Woodstock on December 10, 11 & 12. The gallery has generously given us 30% commission (instead of 50%) because the Society will do the postcard.

VWS Late Winter Juried Show at the Woodstock Folk Art, Prints & Antiquities...they want us back after our wonderful show in 2003. More on that to come for March 06.

So keep those in mind while you're painting this summer and enjoy this picture perfect Vermont weather!

Update - April 28

OK...here it is: the 2005 Summer Challenge from the Enigma Gallery in Essex:

The theme of the Juried VWS Show which we announced at the luncheon will be "Understanding and interpreting Wassily Kandinsky"

I can hear the comments already, so keep them to yourself until you do some research...Kandinsky said (among many other things...)

"At the appointed time, necessities become ripe. That is, the creative spirit (which one can designate as the abstract spirit) finds an avenue to the soul, later to other souls, and causes a yearning, an inner urge."

I encourage people to look up this brilliant Fauve painter who helped birth the expressionist movement. Pamela, the owner of Enigma has given us a challenge to which I hope can all rise!

Have fun with this and stay tuned for further details. If you missed the luncheon, email me for the details of delivery times, etc.

Annette

Update - March 9, 2005

I don't know what will happen to this if they secede to New Hampshire, but so far anyone in the Vermont Watercolor Society would be eligible to apply. Sheryl passed it on to send out...
